About Braddon
The Federal and State electorate of Braddon covers the North-West Coast of Tasmania, including King Island.
Braddon is a rural electorate, covering about 11,760 square kilometres, and includes seven municipalities: Burnie, Central Coast, Circular Head, Devonport, King Island, Latrobe and Waratah-Wynyard.
The major population centres are the cities of Devonport and Burnie and the towns of Currie, Latrobe, Penguin, Port Sorell, Smithton, Somerset, Stanley, Ulverstone, Waratah and Wynyard.
First proclaimed as Darwin in 1903, the electorate was renamed in 1955 after a prominent Tasmanian statesman, Sir Edward Braddon.
Sir Edward (1829-1904) was a Premier of Tasmania from 1894 to 1899 and Member of the House of Representatives from 1901 to 1904, and played a prominent role in the move towards Federation.
Braddon is unique as an electorate in that it encompasses a distinct regional community – the North-West Coast of Tasmania.
