Spreyton Fresh Takes on the World 22nd January 2007 Leading growers and juice manufacturers Spreyton Fresh will take on the world with their new fruit grader. This will provide consistency of supply to a very competitive market place as seen by Taiwan buyer Darryl Lin of La Fruition Co Ltd. As one of the local agribusiness leaders and member of the Produce of Heaven Task Force in 2007, Spreyton Fresh experienced first hand the need for consistency in product delivery for the export market. Visiting Taiwan in June 2007 and then Hong Kong in August 2007 with the Produce of Heaven group, Spreyton Fresh met with key buyers who were quick to communicate the importance of consistency with boxed produce especially size and quality. Taking this on board, Spreyton Fresh invested in a new grader to ensure they meet international market needs of consistency. The Grader will take 5 photos of cherries to determine size and colour, providing accurate sizes for export. “We can be confident that a box of 30mm cherries has 30mm cherries and therefore eliminate the risk of our product being rejected due to inconsistency,” said Michelle Distill Director, Spreyton Fresh. “Our efficiency has improved around 100%. Currently we are grading around 5.5 tonnes of cherries in an 8 or 9 hour day. Previously, this volume would have required 2 days with 2 shifts each day. “We have completed two export shipments this year with very positive feedback and such investment will assure a great export future for us. “If we had not had the opportunity with Mark Baker and the Produce of Heaven, we may not have made such an investment at this stage. “I encourage more local companies to experience the global market first hand to appreciate and understand the needs of the export market,” said Michelle. “I am looking forward to the proposed Produce of Heaven activities with Mark for 2008 to Dubai and India while also hosting Taiwan buyers from our 2007 mission,” said Michelle.
